Moths Playtime, 16mm film, March 2023

My thesis, titled, Moths Playtime was shot on 16mm black and white film. During the FVNMAS Festival at the Gene Siskel Film Center, my thesis was screened directly from the 16mm film itself.  The work I have made is about the relationship to the material itself and the personal relationships I have with loved ones. In the span of about five minutes, I showcase different in-camera production techniques as well as post-production methods to edit the film. The main themes in Moths Playtime are the joy of friendship and the self-aware use of the camera. I was intuitively working while coming up with the idea of the image of the moth.

The Greek word for moth, Νυχτοπεταλούδα, translates to "butterfly of the night." I view the moth as the shadow version of the butterfly, which has much more joyous connotations attached to it universally and culturally. I chose a less beloved creature to express the unique quality of friendships. Throughout the process of making this film, I thought of Maya Deren’s work. She had written essays about the value of filmmaking as an amateur, although, paradoxically, she was a true master of the medium. Like Deren, I carefully storyboarded and tried my best to match what I had planned beforehand.
