Stills from The Three Graces

In an experimental film festival, //sense, I screened one of my films titled, The Three Graces, at the Gene Siskel Film Center. I hand developed the film I shot and purposefully mishandled it in the process to give the scratch marks and washed out and blurry images. I scanned it with my professor in my school and the international klein blue color was the result. I embraced this process because it captured the chemicals of the film alchemizing with the light of the scanner creating an almost miraculous and magical reaction. I chose the theme of the Three Graces because of their Greek mythological origins as well as their presence in an art historical sense. The names of the three deities are Euphrosyne (Mirth), Aglaia (Elegance), and Thalia (Youth). In depicting the attendants of Aphrodite, artists were taking ownership of their idea of beauty. They thought of beauty as something that comes from above and we as artists can only grasp in the shadows making synthetic versions of beauty in our physical world. They would bring beauty- something divine and outside of our cosmos and craft their interpretation of it to bring it to the domestic sphere. It is not something we can appropriate, but something we can only approximate. In my definition of beauty, I created something imperfect as a self-declared amateur filmmaker.
