Self-Portraiture October 2023

The Fool in Tarot is the card that represents new beginnings, beginner's luck, an adventure into the unknown, innocence, potential. The man in the image stands at the edge of a cliff but he is there joyously holding a white flower and with his a little loyal companion and guide, a white dog. I based the self-portraits off of this tarot card. I moved to Europe completely leaving the US behind me. It has been challenging but a very beautiful experience. I have begun a new life in Europe. As soon as I graduated, I boarded a plane to Athens, Greece. I then decided to work at hotel in the rural country in the town of Mantova, Italy. I felt even more like the Fool there. I did not know Italian or have any prior knowledge of it like I do of my Greek heritage. During the Fall season in Northern Italy, fog sets in the dawn of the morning. I found this a holy experience to go outside and not see anything but fog. On my day off, I shot these self-portraits on my 35mm film camera in the field next to where I worked. The whole time during the shoot I thought of this card. I used a yellow trash bag because yellow is the dominant color of this card.
